Our Life in Head Start

Hello Families:

It's been a while since we have posted a blog post but it has been a very busy Winter for Ms. Maria. It was my last semester in Graduate school and I had a lot of exams and work to do but I am finally done... YAY!!! =)

We have also had a very fun and busy beginning of Winter in our classroom. As you all can see everyday we are constantly changing our classroom decor with all of the things we are learning about. Many parents also tell us about how their children come home talking about all the new things they learn in school. We are so happy that we are all learning. We have learned about Families, Friends, the Holidays, Winter and Arctic animals, Hibernation, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Chinese New Year, Groundhog Day, Valentine's Day and Presidents. In addition to all of those themes we have improves our writing, literacy, reading strategy and number skills.

Below you will find some pictures of what we have been doing the past couple of months and our blog will be updated more frequently now. Thank you all for being so patient.

Hola Familias:

Ha sida mucho tiempo desde que escribimos un post, pero ha sido un invierno muy ocupado para Ms. Maria. Fue mi ultimo semestre en la escuela posgrado y tuve muchos exámenes y trabajo, pero por fin ya termine.... YAY!!! =)

Como quiera nosotros nos divertimos mucho en la escuela y aprendimos mucho en estos meses. Como ustedes ven todo los días estamos cambiando la decoración del salon de clase con todo lo que aprendimos. Muchos padres nos han comentado de sus niños hablándole de todas las cosas que ellos están aprendiendo. Estamos feliz que todos están aprendiendo. En el invierno aprendimos de las familias, amistad, las fiestas, invierno y los animales del ártico, hibernación, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Año Lunar, día de la Marmota y de los presidentes. Ademas de esos temas mejoramos las destrezas de la escritura, literatura, leyendo y los números.

Our Fall Parade at the Park - Parada de Otoño en el Parque

Hi families,

In October we had so much fun. This post will contain a lot of photos of all of our different activities.

In October we spoke about pumpkins and their life cycle and we also were able to open up a pumpkin and investigate what was inside. We continued recognizing our letters and letters sounds and focused on the letters M, P and N. Also, in Math we learned about number 6 and 7 as well as what happens

when we add one more to a number (adding). We will continue talking about adding one more during the month of November as well. We can't forget about the Pumpkin Patch we created in our dramatic play area!!

During reading we continued to work on our reading skills by making predictions, connecting the stories to our real lives, growing the information in our schema and re-telling stories. All of these strategies will help students comprehend text better when they get to Kindergarten and start reading. Our focus books were Leonardo the Terrible Monster, The Creepy Carrots and a non-fiction text about Pumpkins.

During the month of November we will learn about Families, Turkey's and Thanksgiving. We also hope everyone has a safe and fun Thanksgiving.

Hola familias,

En Octubre nos divertimos mucho. Este post contiene muchas fotos de las diferentes actividades que hicimos este mes.

Patterns and Measuring
Patrones y midiendo

En Octubre hablamos de las calabazas y su ciclo de vida y abrimos una calabaza para investigar lo que estaba adentro. Reconocimos las letras y los sonidos M, N, P y en matemáticas trabajamos con los numbers 6 y 7. También aprendimos que pasa cuando añadimos uno mas a un number (sumando). En el mes de octubre vamos a seguir explorando que pasa cuando añadimos una mas. Y no nos podemos olvidar de la huerta de calabazas que creamos en el centro dramático!!!

Durante la lectura continuamos a trabajar en nuestras destrezas de leer. Hicimos predicciones, conectamos los cuentos a nuestras vidas, nuestras Schemas crecieron y volvimos a contar cuentos. Estas destrezas ayudan a que los niños comprendan lo que ellos lean cuando llegan al Kinder. Los libros de enfoque de este mes eran Leonardo the Terrible Monster, The creepy Carrots y un libro de calabazas.
